Gyeonggi Province to Establish Carbon-Neutral Industrial Complexes and Raise Carbon-Neutral Fund of USD 97 mil. in Proactive Response to Climate Change
SUWON, South Korea, March 22, 2022 /PRNewswire/www.parahyangan-post.com - Gyeonggi Province announced that it will promote carbon-neutral initiatives to proactively respond to the climate crisis by developing more than five carbon-neutral industrial complexes by 2030 and raising a carbon-neutral fund of approximately KRW 120 billion over the next five years.
To this end, Gyeonggi Province will implement 13 action plans centered on two key strategies – "industrial transition to green" and "expansion of renewable energy" based on resident participation – under the vision of "transition to a fair green economy for carbon neutrality."
To realize the first key strategy, "industrial transition to green," Gyeonggi Province will create more than five carbon-neutral industrial complexes by 2030. It aims to support low-carbon processes by providing eco-friendly facilities and technologies. This initiative is the province's representative project, demonstrating its firm commitment to transforming the development, operation, and management paradigms of industrial complexes.
"Since the climate crisis is directly related to the matter of our survival, specific and swift actions are required for the transition to decarbonization. Industrial complexes account for around 50 percent of industrial energy usage and greenhouse gas emissions in the province. Considering this reality, creating carbon-neutral industrial complexes is the challenge of the times," said Jung Do-young, Director General of Economy Planning for the Gyeonggi Provincial Government.
He added, "Gyeonggi Province will devise our own carbon-neutral industrial complex model by 2025 and establish five industrial complexes according to that model by 2030. We will then expand the application of that business model to all industrial complexes in the province by 2050. We will actively support technological improvements in low-carbon processes including the distribution of environment-friendly facilities and technologies."
In addition, Gyeonggi Province will raise and operate a carbon-neutral fund of KRW 120 billion over the next five years with the aim of creating a carbon-neutral industrial ecosystem. Based on this fund, the provincial government plans to identify eco-friendly carbon-neutral businesses and actively invest in those businesses based in the province that promote the "Green New Deal," renewable energy, and low-carbon green growth. In 2022, it will initially raise KRW 30 billion, including KRW 6 billion in contributions and KRW 24 billion from private investment, and then steadily increase the scale.
To promote a paradigm shift among provincial residents and expand profit-sharing renewable energy per the second key strategy, Gyeonggi Province will initiate a photovoltaic generation project utilizing public sites and encourage 100,000 households to join "RE100" (a global campaign committed to 100% renewable electricity) in order to ensure renewable energy rights. This is part of the province's efforts to expand the implementation of current "Green New Deal" policy initiatives. The output of a 1GW power plant can supply the electricity needs of about 320,000 households based on 300kWh of average monthly usage over one year.
